One of the most important parts of a developing tooth is the roots, as they provide the necessary support to hold the tooth in the jawbone. The roots also help to stimulate the flow of vitamins and nutrients that keep the jawbone strong and healthy. All the blood vessels and nerve fibers in the tooth are vital to its overall health. When they become decayed or infected, it can cause a great deal of pain. Without proper care, the tooth can become infected, possibly fall out, and cause bone loss. One of the best procedures to treat the discomfort and save the tooth is a root canal. At A.K. Dr. Sharda, DMD, our root canal dentist can provide the dental care you need to treat your decayed or infected tooth.

What is a root canal?

A root canal is a standard procedure that’s done to relieve pain and preserve the tooth. Before the procedure, the root canal dentist will thoroughly numb the area to prevent discomfort. During the procedure, they will remove the infected pulp and nerve, clean and shape the area, and fill and seal the space to cover the opening of the tooth. In most cases, the results of a root canal will last a lifetime.

What causes the need for a root canal?

Generally, a root canal is recommended for a tooth that’s showing signs of an infection or severe pulpal nerve damage. Check out the following section to learn more about the common causes of nerve damage.

Trauma

Any type of trauma to the tooth that causes damage to the nerve tissue. Athletes who have experienced an injury to the mouth may already have existing pulpal nerve damage.

Tooth Decay

A cavity that reached down into the nerve or filling can make space for harmful bacteria to move in. If left untreated, the bacteria can reach the pulp and nerve, which can lead to an infection and tooth decay.

Cracked/Broken Tooth

A tooth that’s been cracked or fractured deep enough can damage the pulp.

Symptoms of pulpal nerve damage

While everyone experiences different symptoms, here are some of the most common signs of pulpal nerve damage:

  • Tooth pain while eating
  • Oversensitivity to hot or cold drinks
  • Swollen gums
  • Discoloration in the tooth
  • Drainage from the tooth
